– Transition
– Switch

According to the American Psychological Association, resilience is the process of adapting well in the face of adversity, trauma, tragedy, threats, or significant sources of stress. As we look at career resilience, the sources of stress would likely come from the workplace, such as an increase in workload, a change in portfolio, or even the loss of a job. As such, career resilience would mean ‘bouncing back’ from difficult situations and experiencing exponential growth.

The 7 Pillars of Resilience by German psychotherapist Micheline Rampe is a useful model for any individual who would like to master resilience:

  1. Developing optimism
  2. Acceptance of the situation
  3. Focusing on potential solutions
  4. Leaving the victim role
  5. Taking responsibility for one’s own life
  6. Planning a flexible strategy to deal with future challenges
  7. Building a support network

The Brief Resilience Scale (BRS) is a simple self -assessment that individuals can use to assess their resilience.

Career resilience can be cultivated and we would like to recommend 5 dimensions for your self-directed learning.

  1. Ability to embrace change and adapt (6 components)
  2. Ability to learn and improve (6 components)
  3. Ability to recognise opportunities and take action (6 components)
  4. Ability to build and nurture instrumental relationships (6 components)
  5. Ability to reposition and expand skillsets (6 components)
  6. Ability to see ahead and achieve the vision (6 components)
  7. Ability to rely on self to do the job well (6 components)

To find out more about the components of each dimension, you are welcome to connect with us.

Let Your Life Map Inspire Your Career Ambitions

Life Map is a visual timeline that tracks your life journey and provides you with a helicopter view of

  • significant milestones/events in your life that shapes you
  • achievements that you have done and are proud of
  • childhood passions that you have not realised and perhaps is the right time to revisit
  • obstacles that you overcame and defines you

Some of us may observe patterns of choices in life. It may even provide you with your core values that determine how decisions were made in life. You may then reorganise the information using the SWOT analysis to further understand your strengths, weaknesses and how you view external threats and opportunities.

These are some examples of life map:

You could consider drawing your life map using pen-and-paper (refer to the blank Life Map template below). You could also use an online tool such as Canva. Share it with someone whom you can trust and let the conversation gives you a better perspective of your career progression and development plan.

Whether you are new in the world of work or someone going through a career transition, the Life Map can be a good compass to guide new perspectives to your career ambitions.

If you would like to explore deeper in your self-discovery journey, you are welcome to schedule a consultation with us.
